Stansted is a bustling village and a gateway to one of the busiest airports in London. Every year, millions of passengers use London Stansted Airport as launchpad to more than 150 destinations across Europe and around the world. Beyond the airport, there are unique sights and attractions in Stansted.
Step back in time at Mountfitchet Castle, a Norman stronghold that’s been reimagined as a living history museum. The castle is a protected Historic Monument and is encircled by imposing walls. Inside is a recreation of a medieval village, complete with thatch-roof cottages. Kids love feeding the deer and making friends with other friendly farm animals on the castle grounds.
Hatfield Forest is operated by the National Trust and protects a unique landscape of oaks, maples and hornbeams. The Hatfield Forest Tree Walk loops around the park and takes you past the lakeside café. Visit in May or June to see the meadows strewn with bright yellow buttercups.
Getting there
Stansted is a 1.5-hour drive from Central London. The village is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Trains run between Stansted Mountfitchet Railway Station and London Liverpool in 45 minutes. The Stansted Express connects Stansted Airport with Central London in under one hour.
