Many of the historic buildings are painted in bright colours and house cafes, shops and galleries. Dine on sun-drenched patios and sample the island’s famous seafood caught in the surrounding waters. Try local specialties like “finkenwerder” pan-fried fish served with a rich cream sauce.
Visit Inselmuseum and learn more about the island’s colourful past. The museum occupies a historic captain’s house built in the 18th century and showcases antiques, photographs and taxidermy animals. Don’t miss the chance to ride the “museumpferdebahn” horse-drawn trams. It departs from the museum and takes you on a scenic ride through the island’s dunes, meadows and forests.
Swim, sunbathe and beachcomb on Spiekeroog's pristine sandy beaches. Strand Spiekeroog is the busiest and features a long stretch of golden sand dotted with beach huts. Splash in the waves or sign up for lessons with a local surf school. Off the beach, you’ll find wildlife-rich nature reserves where you can spot birds like spoonbills, skylarks and redshanks.
