Seaside is a swathe of beachfront real estate sprawling along both sides of the Necanicum River at the southern end of the Clatsop Plains. The area is known for its population of Pacific razor clams, broad sandy beaches and outdoor activities.
Things to do in Seaside
Visit the Seaside Aquarium, one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast. Stroll through a collection of underwater tanks brimming with plant and animal life, touch sea anemones and starfish in the Discovery Centre and enjoy feeding the seals.
For a dose of history, check out Lewis and Clark Salt Works. Explore the site of salt making for Lewis and Clark’s return journey in the early 1800s, read the historic plaques and admire the salt ovens utilised to preserve meat.
Travel back in time with a trip to the Camp 18 Museum. Browse the collection of logging artefacts, check out the original steam donkey and fully-rigged tree spar and tour the blacksmith’s shop.
Spend a day out in nature hiking Tillamook Head, where Indian Beach connects to Ecola State Park. Travel the 11 kilometres through the woodlands to capture intermittent views of the ocean, stop for an afternoon picnic and keep your eyes peeled for elk and eagles.
Getting around Seaside
Seaside is less than a two-hour drive from Portland along US-26 East and Highway 101. You can easily get around by using the intercity buses or hailing taxis. Organise a hire car to explore the surrounding region.
