Roldal is a centuries-old village set on the banks of the Storelva River and surrounded by rugged peaks. Roldal Ski Centre boasts some of the best conditions in Europe, with snowfall often continuing well into spring and early summer. Most of the resort is set above the treeline, with wide-open slopes that are perfect for freeriding. You can also take part in winter sports like sledding and cross-country skiing.
Roldal is a great base for outdoor adventures in Hardangervidda National Park. Explore scenic mountain trails, scramble up glacier moraines and fish for trout in picturesque alpine lakes. Birdwatching here is excellent, with the chance to spot high-altitude species like the Red-necked Phalarope and Great Snipe.
Roldal Stave Church was built in the 13th century and towers over the village centre. It’s one of the best-preserved stave churches in Europe and has been welcoming pilgrims for centuries. Inside, you can view the famous crucifix, which is thought to have healing powers.
