A small town in the rural Riverland area, Renmark is set in sweeping hills of fruit orchards and vineyards and bordered on one side by the Murray River. Its shaded streets are filled with galleries, antique shops and bustling markets, with local bars featuring the best of the region’s beers and wines.
Things to do in Renmark
The Murray River has played a vital part in the town’s history, so you can’t visit Renmark without taking a canoe along some of the creeks and spotting the local kangaroos, koalas and emus. Stop by the Heritage-listed Paringa Suspension Bridge and see it raised twice a day to allow boats to pass underneath. Climb the Heading Cliffs lookout tower for panoramic views of the river and the Golden Limestone cliffs.
Renmark is the home of Ruston’s, Australia’s largest rose garden, which has thousands of different rose varieties and an interesting classic car collection. The Renmark-Paringa Museum has a large exhibition on farm machinery set on over two hectares of land on the banks of the river, which is the ideal setting for an afternoon picnic.
The town has a charming collection of boutique shops. Visit Cammies Antiques and Collectables and browse their range of glassware and vintage books or stop by Coongalena Cottage Art Studio and browse the paintings while you admire majestic views of Coongalena Island. Spend some time at Twenty Third Street Distillery for a tour of their century-old copper stills and sample the oak-matured brandy and whiskey.
Getting around Renmark
The easiest way to get around Renmark is by car, with a car hire service in the centre of town. Townsend’s Bus Travel also provides a bus service between the eastern riverland towns. There is a daily bus service from Adelaide to Renmark, which takes four hours.
