Nestled inland from Spain’s Costa Tropical, Polopos is a traditional mountain village in Andalusia. While its population has dropped significantly since the 19th century, it has seen a recent boost in popularity as the setting for a Dutch reality TV series “Het Spaanse Dorp Polopos”. The show followed five couples as they restored dilapidated houses and established businesses in the village.
Things to do in Polopos
In the heart of Polopos is the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, which was constructed in the 18th century atop an old mosque. Admire its red-brick bell tower and pedimented facade before stepping inside to experience a local Mass. A short stroll from the church is the Museo Historia de Polopos, which details the people and events that have shaped the town.
For views back toward Polopos, follow the stone walkway that leads from the town centre, passing by the main water supply and around the mountain. Alternatively, hike to the abandoned village of Las Casillas, which lies directly west of Polopos and has become a popular photography location. After your walk, you can refuel on hearty vegetarian fare at the Restaurante La Cantina Verde.
A string of beaches hug the Mediterranean coastline south of Polopos, including Playa La Mamola and Playa Caserones. For a more remote beach experience, head to isolated Playa de La Rijana, which is an impressive snorkelling destination. Also nearby is pebbly Playa Cambriles - Lújar, where you’ll find crystal clear waters and lively beach bars.
Getting around Polopos
Polopos is just over an hour’s drive from Granada and Federico García Lorca Granada Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect to Polopos while the village is small enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the area.
