Things to do in Yunlin County
Nestled in the hillsides, Caoling is one of the most scenic destinations in Yunlin County. The beautiful Caoling Historic Trail winds through the hillsides and takes you through sun-dappled forests and past grassy headlands. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean.
Every year, more than one million pilgrims visit Beigang Chaotian Temple. The centuries-old temple was built in 1694 and is dedicated to a Chinese sea goddess. It’s one of the most important Mazu temples in the country and will impress you with its extravagant architecture.
Yunlin County is dotted with excellent museums and cultural centres where you can learn about the rich history and heritage of the region. The Beigang Cultural Centre in Beigang features exhibits on local traditions while the Soy Sauce Brewing Museum in Douliu City celebrates the hugely popular Taiwanese condiment.
Yunlin County has a long history of agriculture and is proud of its local produce. While you’re in the area be sure to try local delicacies such as coffee from Gukeng, hard clams from Taixi, soy sauce from Xiluo and pickled cabbage from Dapi.
Douliu City is an excellent base for exploring Yunlin County. Admire the beautifully restored Japanese colonial-era buildings along Taiping Street and take your pick of authentic Taiwanese restaurants along Minsheng South Road. The colourful Ren Wen night market is one of the biggest in Taiwan.
Getting around Yunlin County
Yunlin County is located in Western Taiwan. Douliu City is a one-hour drive from Taichung City and 1.5 hours from Tainan City. Rental cars are a good way to explore Yunlin County at your own pace. Douliu City Train Station offers connections to nearby towns and cities, including Taichung City and Tainan City. Chiayi Airport is a 45-minute drive south of Douliu City.
