Things to do in Oystre Slidre
Visit the Stave Church in the village of Hegge and marvel at the incredible craftsmanship. It dates back to the 13th century and features a wood frame and postcard-perfect steeple. You’ll enter the churchyard through an ornate gate carved in the Middle Ages, and inside is a beautiful altarpiece created by a local artist. The grassy graveyard is dotted with centuries-old tombstones.
Oystre Slidre is a gateway to Langsua National Park, where you can discover low-lying mountains, birch woodlands and old-growth forests. Hike through rolling heathlands and summit peaks like Mt. Skaget for breathtaking views. Parts of the park are carpeted with colourful orchids and mountain violets. In wetland areas you can see Eurasian cranes, hen harriers and other birdlife, while herds of wild reindeer add to the picturesque setting.
At more than 2,000 metres above sea level, Oystre Rasletind is the highest point in the region. The trail to the summit is steep but easy to follow and rewards you with sweeping views over the surrounding mountains, lakes and countryside.
