Nam-gu is a gateway to Daegu, a lively and progressive city with beautiful heritage buildings, leafy parks and a buzzing downtown district. The neighbourhood is set at the foot of a forested mountain and offers easy access to the city’s signature peak, as well as local attractions like a dinosaur park and pedestrianised food street.
Things to do in Nam-gu
Enjoy sweeping views over the city from Apsan Park. Ride the cable car to the summit or work up a sweat on the rugged hiking trail. Visit in spring to see the park blanketed in pastel-pink cherry blossoms. Within the park you’ll find historic gems like Eunjeoksa, an ancient Buddhist temple founded in 926 AD.
Try local specialties like “jjamppong” spicy seafood noodle soup and “galbi-jjim” braised short ribs at family-owned restaurants in Nam-gu. Find some of the best eateries on Anjirang Gopchang Street. Plastic tables and chairs spill onto the pedestrianised alley and serve legendary dishes like “gopchang” marinated intestines.
Get up close with a life-sized Tyrannosaurus at Gosangol Dinosaur Park. The attraction is built on a former archaeological site where a set of Cretaceous Period dinosaur footprints were discovered. It’s now a family-friendly theme park with enormous robotic dinosaurs, where you can be amazed by a huge Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Spinosaurus and more. Hunt for fossils in the archaeology experience zone and let the kids burn off steam in the dinosaur-themed playground.
Use Nam-gu as a base to visit famous attractions like the Daegu Herbal Medicine Market. Established in the 17th century, it’s one of the oldest medicine markets in Korea. Walk past stalls selling everything from herbal tea and medicinal mushrooms to dried frogs and lizard tails. Try traditional remedies like acupuncture and cupping if you’re feeling curious.
