Overlooking a tranquil bay, Moraitika is a charming town and tourist resort on the east coast of Corfu. It’s renowned for its family-friendly beach and abundance of water sports, including everything from jet skiing to paragliding. Moraitika also provides a convenient base for discovering the cultural and natural attractions of southern Corfu.
Things to do in Moraitika
Spend your days relaxing on the pebbly shores of Moraitika Beach, where umbrellas and sun loungers are available for rent. A range of water sports are available at the beach or you can join one of the local dive operators to explore the underwater sites nearby. Kids will love the Water Fun Park with its inflatable play equipment.
A short drive inland from Moraitika are the 13th-century Byzantine ruins of Gardiki, one of three castles that defended the island before Venetian rule. Designed in an octagonal shape, it features eight towers decorated with rows of tiles and the remnants of a chapel adorned with religious frescoes. Stone tools and animal bones dating back to the Palaeolithic era have been uncovered nearby.
Keen birdwatchers can visit Korission Lagoon, which drains into the Ionian Sea via a narrow canal. In addition to providing a habitat for greater flamingos, Eurasian wigeons and cormorants, the lagoon is notable for its abundance of butterfly species. A forest of prickly juniper extends from the lagoon to a sun-drenched beach where you’ll find crystal-clear waters for swimming.
