Located on a sunny plateau in the Inntal Valley, Mieming is a sprawling municipality backed by the snow-capped Mieminger Mountains. It comprises several villages surrounded by picturesque farms and alpine pastures that served as the setting for the German TV series “The Mountain Doctor”. In addition to hiking and lake swimming in the summer, Mieming is a popular base for winter sports.
Things to do in Mieming
A highlight of visiting Mieming is exploring the area’s hiking trails, which include the Stams Nature Trail that leads through a magnificent oak forest. For something more challenging, you can climb Rosskopf Mountain to the Bielefelder Hütte before continuing to the 2,646-metre-high summit. Alternatively, trek through the picturesque Rappertal Valley to the viewing platform that looks out across the Inntal Valley. The long-distance Via Alpina also runs through the Mieminger Mountains.
In the warmer months, you can cool off in Mieming’s local swimming lake or enjoy a round on the Mieminger Plateau Golf Course. In the winter, head to the nearby Grünberg Ski Resort, which offers easy downhill slopes for beginners and a dedicated children’s area. Jump aboard the lift that ascends to the Panoramastuhl, an oversized chair that offers sweeping views across the Mieminger Plateau.
Kids will also love the Mini Dampf Tirol, a miniature steam train that chugs its way through the village of Barwies. Over its 350-metre-long course, it passes through a tunnel and across two bridges near the Waldschwimmbad Barwies swimming pool. A short walk north is the Waldspielplatz, where you’ll find children’s play equipment.
