Framed by snow-capped mountains, Lermoos is a small town and ski resort in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It’s located on the route of an ancient Roman road, the Via Claudia Augusta, which is a popular means for cyclists to cross the Alps. Lermoos forms part of the Zugspitze Arena, which comprises seven ski resorts and a lakeside hiking trail.
Things to do in Lermoos
In the winter months, you can hit the downhill ski runs of Lermoos or take advantage of the toboggan runs, cross-country skiing and winter hiking trails of the Zugspitze Arena. This sprawling ski area is named after Germany’s highest peak, the 2,962-metre-high Zugspitze, which is visible from Lermoos. Once the snow melts, there are plenty of mountain biking trails to explore, including the 112-kilometre-long Zugsptize-8.
Want to get a bird’s eye view of Lermoos? Ride the thermals during a paragliding flight with one of the local operators. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding mountains, with one of the most popular being Moosle’s Explorer Trail. It takes in several research stations highlighting the flora and fauna of the Grubigstein, as well as a treehouse and an observation tower.
A switchbacking road leads north from Lermoos to the Aussichtsplattform Tuftl Alm, which offers magnificent views across the surrounding mountains. A short drive west is the Tier & Spielpark Bichlbach, where you can get up close to friendly goats, sheep and donkeys. In addition to its children’s playground, there’s a small go-karting course to explore.
