Mazzaro is an upscale resort set at the foot of soaring sea cliffs. The pebble beach overlooks a postcard-perfect inlet fringed by calm, crystalline water. Rent a deckchair, bask in the sunshine and order cocktails from beachfront “lidos” that dot the shoreline.
Further up the beach, you’ll find seafood restaurants serving delicious Italian fare. Dig into platters overflowing with local swordfish, sea bass, clams, squid, mussels and octopus. You’ll also find classics like pizza, pasta and rainbow-coloured gelato.
Tour boats whisk you to Grotta Azzurra, a hidden sea cave accessible only by boat. Light streams into the cavern through a small crevice and creates a magical blue glow. You can also explore Isola Bella, an offshore island and nature reserve.
Ride the cable car to Taormina, a picturesque village perched on the clifftops above Mazzaro. The pedestrianised village dates to the 4th century and feels like stepping back in time. From the clifftops, you’ll get breathtaking views over Mount Etna and the sparkling Ionian Sea.
Getting there
A cable car connects Mazzaro with the village of Taormina. Steep walkways also connect Mazzaro and Taormina. Taormina is a 45-minute drive from Catania and one hour from Catania Airport.
