Overlooking the Ionian Sea, Letojanni is a laid-back resort town on the east coast of Sicily. It was founded following the Moorish invasions when the island’s inhabitants began moving down to the coastline and remained a peaceful fishing village until the late 19th century.
Things to do in Letojanni
Wander through the heart of Letojanni to admire its 19th-century palazzi, such as the Palazzo Fleres-Tornatore and the castle-like Palazzo Durante. Visit the Church of San Giuseppe to see its religious mosaics and take note of the memorial to the composer Francesco Durante created by the Sicilian artist Ettore Ximenes. For a cultural fix, head to the Palazzo della Cultura, which houses a fascinating collection of traditional crafts and Caltagirone ceramics.
In the summer months, you can spend your days on Spiaggia di Letojanni, a pebbly beach that stretches the length of the town. Swim in the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea or watch the local fishermen bringing in the day’s catch. Backing the beach are plenty of cafes, pizzerias and gelaterias where you can treat yourself throughout the day.
Letojanni makes an ideal base for visiting Taormina, a spectacular hilltop town renowned for its ancient Greco-Roman theatre. Photograph the Baroque facade of the Chiesa di San Giuseppe and stroll through the tranquil gardens of the Villa Comunale, which offer elevated views across the coastline. Built into a rock face below the ancient Saracen Castle is the Chiesa Madonna della Rocca.
