Things to do in Leyburn
Forming part of Tupgill Park Estate is the Forbidden Corner, a folly garden that was established in the 1980s by Colin Armstrong. Step through the iconic Facetower to admire the statues and sculptures that dot the grounds, together with water fountains and grottoes. It is designed like a labyrinth, with visitors encouraged to find various plaques hidden throughout the garden.
South of Leyburn are the ruins of Middleham Castle, which was the childhood home of King Richard III. Built in the 12th century by Robert Fitzrandolph, it was designed to defend the road connecting Richmond and Skipton. While exploring the site, take note of the arrow slits built into the stone walls and admire the modern statue of King Richard III designed by Linda Thompson.
On the eastern outskirts of Leyburn is the Harmby Waterfall, which cascades down a tiered rock face into a small pool. It can be accessed along a short walking trail that winds through the atmospheric woods of Harmby Gill. If you drive in the other direction from Leyburn, you’ll arrive at the photogenic Wensley Waterfall. After your visit, you can grab a bite to eat at the Three Horse Shoes pub, which lies just across the stream.
