Sprawling across the Pinellas Peninsula, Largo is a vibrant city in Florida’s Tampa Bay area. It was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century and was officially incorporated in 1905. After decades of citrus growing and cattle ranching, Largo was transformed with shopping centres and public parks following World War II.
Things to do in Largo
In the heart of the city is Largo Central Park, a 28-hectare green space that is shaded by mature oak trees. Kids can let loose in the all-abilities playground while parents can watch the world go by from one of the nearby benches. Leafy walking trails and boardwalks wind their way through the park and there’s a photogenic fountain pond.
Swimming pools and waterslides that will appeal to ages can be found at the Highland Family Aquatic Center, which is patrolled by lifeguards for your peace of mind. After your visit, you can grab a bite to eat at Thai Bay & Sushi or Tampa Style Cubans, both of which are located nearby. For a wider choice of eateries and retail stores, head to the Largo Plaza.
On the southern edge of Largo is the Florida Botanical Gardens, which encompasses a Wetlands Walkway and Wildlife Overlook showcasing the native flora and fauna. Wander through the themed gardens planted with succulents, herbs and tropical fruits or be surrounded by colourful insects in the Butterfly Garden. Kids will love the Children’s Discovery Garden with its play equipment and potting area.
