Surrounded by the picturesque landscapes of the Lamer Winkel, Lam is a small town in Bavaria. It’s located just a stone’s throw from Germany’s border with the Czech Republic and within easy access to the 1,456-metre-high peak of Großer Arber and its winter ski resort.
Things to do in Lam
Extending along the western edge of Lam is Panorama Park, a picturesque green space with leafy walking trails and a children’s playground. You can take advantage of the fitness obstacle course or settle in at one of the benches to watch the world go by. Also nearby is a public swimming pool complete with a water slide, sauna and steam room.
A short drive south-east of Lam will take you to Bayerwald-Tierpark Lohberg, a small wildlife park home to around 400 animals native to the Bavarian-Bohemian border area. In addition to elks, raccoons and wolves, you can get up close to moose, European pond turtles and otters. Kids will love the adventure playground and night tours are available to observe the park’s nocturnal species in action.
In the winter months, you can hit the ski slopes of the Großer Arber, which is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. It features 13 kilometres of slopes to explore, as well as a family-friendly ski area where kids can practice their skills. A winter hiking trail leads from the Arberstadl to the Thurnhofhang, which is home to a terrain park.
