Things to do in Landsberg am Lech
Landsberg am Lech is anchored by a handsome Old Town encircled by ancient city walls. Inside, you’ll find a maze of cobblestone streets and squares lined with colourful buildings housing German bakeries, cafes and traditional pubs.
Housed in a former Jesuit school, the Neues Stadtmuseum showcases everything from prehistoric artefacts to 21st-century art. The magnificent Stadtpfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt church is also famous for its Gothic-era stained-glass windows and 15th-century “Madonna with Child” sculpture.
From tree-shaded beer gardens on the banks of the river to cosy Bavarian-style taverns, eating your way through Landsbergam Lech is considered a rite of passage. With its outdoor tables, riverside location and Andechs Monastery beer, Lechgarten is a firm favourite with locals.
For history buffs, gazing up at the gates of Landsberg Jail is a sombre highlight. Adolf Hitler was the jail’s most notorious prisoner and was banished to Landsberg following the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. It was here that he penned his infamous Mein Kampf autobiography.
Getting around Landsberg am Lech
Landsberg am Lech is easily accessed from the famous Romantic Road. It’s an easy day trip from Munich, with both the drive and the train ride taking around one hour. Once you’ve arrived in the city, walking is the easiest and most atmospheric way to explore the Old Town.
