Tropical paradise isn’t just for the Pacific. Folks on the East Coast of the United States can get their own dream vacation kicks in the Florida Keys, and any holiday here is bound to begin in the Key West International Airport.
Though an international airport in name, Key West’s current passenger routes are all domestic. Popular destinations include Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. There are also many connections to other Florida cities like Tampa and Orlando.
Travel between the Florida Keys is either by road or by water. Pick up a rental car at the Key West International Airport and drive along U.S. Highway 1, “The Overseas Highway”, or rent a boat and sail your way around the islands. There are also shuttle services by Greyhound and Key West Shuttle for those uninterested in the do-it-yourself method.
Just off the Florida shore, it should be no surprise that the first international flight to Key West International Airport was to Cuba in 1913. While 20th century relations between the United States and its Caribbean neighbour have been strained, the recent relaxation of trade and tourism regulations could pave the way for a new Key West to Havana air route.
