Near the banks of the Acheron River, Kanallaki is a small village in Greece’s northwestern region of Epirus. It’s a peaceful base for exploring the natural wonders nearby, which include idyllic springs, rugged canyons and sandy coves overlooking the Ionian Sea.
In the heart of Kanallaki is the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, whose red-tiled domes boast a commanding position overlooking the village square. Coincide your visit with one of the weekly services to experience its opulent interior and admire the sculpture of pilgrims progressing toward its entrance.
A short drive north of Kanallaki will take you to the blissful Αcheron Springs, a turquoise waterway surrounded by rolling hills planted with oak and elm trees. After a refreshing swim, you can walk against the current to one of several scenic waterfalls before refuelling at the traditional tavernas lining the springs.
Getting there
Kanallaki is around 30 minutes’ drive from Parga and 1.5 hours from Ioannina International Airport, which has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting to Kanallaki and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
