Ammoudia is a picturesque fishing village and seaside resort set at the mouth of the Acheron River. The water is calm and crystal-clear, with the shallow seabed stretching more than 100 metres into the Ionian Sea. Sugar-white sand and a sheltered setting make Ammoudia a favourite with local families.
Instead of high-rise resorts, Ammoudia is dotted with small hotels and B&Bs. This gives the town a local and laid-back feel. In the village centre you’ll find cafes and seafood taverns. Try local dishes like baked fish served in a spicy red broth, spaghetti tossed with grilled prawns and sardines marinated in white wine vinegar.
Scenic boat tours are a great way to explore the Acheron River Estuary. You can cruise upstream and learn about the fascinating history of the Acheron River, which is steeped in Greek mythology. Kayaking tours take you further up the river and into the lush riparian forests. Look out for local wildlife and cool off in the aquamarine water.
