Packed with classical landmarks, world-class museums and public green spaces, Central Athens lies at the heart of the Greek capital. It centres around Syntagma Square, home to the Hellenic Parliament and where locals and tourists alike come to watch the hourly Changing of the Guards.
Things to do in Central Athens
Dominating Central Athens is the Acropolis, an ancient citadel that is perched atop a rocky outcrop. It’s here that you’ll find the Parthenon, one of Classical Greece’s most famous buildings, as well as the Old Temple of Athena and the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus. At the Acropolis Museum are artefacts discovered at the site and ancient foundations that can be viewed through glass floors.
Nestled just below the Acropolis is Plaka, an atmospheric neighbourhood of meandering streets lined with bougainvillea-draped houses. It’s packed with small stores selling everything from olives to musical instruments, as well as traditional tavernas where you can grab a bite to eat. Nearby Anafiotika has more of a Cycladic feel due to its whitewashed buildings.
Sprawling across 15 hectares east of Plaka is the National Garden, a scenic green space that encompasses ancient mosaics and Corinthian capitals among its landscaped beds. For sweeping views across Athens, head to the top of Lycabettus Hill, a steep-sloped peak that’s topped by a chapel. At 277 metres, it is the highest point in Central Athens and a particularly popular spot to watch the sunset.
