Escape the crowds on Folegandros, an enchanting Greek island fringed by sandy beaches and limestone cliffs. Despite being sandwiched between Paros and Santorini, Folegandros is quiet and uncrowded. Stroll around postcard-perfect Cycladic villages, hike to a hilltop church and swim in the sparkling Aegean Sea.
Things to do in Folegandros
The enchanting clifftop village of Chora is one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades. Wander along cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses and hot pink bougainvillea vines. Bright blue doors and window shutters add a pop of colour, while cafes spill onto palm-lined Pounta Square. Sit down for traditional “ibrik” coffee and syrupy baklava.
Hike up to the Church of Panagia for sweeping views over the island and the Aegean Sea. The Byzantine church is perched on a hilltop and accessed via a steep, zigzagging stone path. Admire the whitewashed façade and step inside to see the ornate frescoes, marble throne and silver Virgin Mary icon.
The beaches on Folegandros are gorgeous. Katergo is one of the best and will dazzle you with its silver pebble sand and crystalline water. It’s a short boat ride from Karavostasis or you can hike in around 30 minutes. Set on the picturesque cove, Agali Beach is another popular stretch of sand. Tavernas dot the beach and sell cold drinks, snacks and ocean-fresh seafood.
Lace up your boots and explore the scenic hiking trails that crisscross Folegandros. Some trails skirt the clifftops and treat you to spectacular sea views, while other trails take you into the hilly interior and pass through traditional Cycladic villages.
