Once a sleepy fishing village, today Hersonissos is Crete's signature beach resort with an idyllic stretch of sand. You can also visit a traditional Cretan village, get up close with rescued marine animals and eat your way through traditional Greek taverns.
Things to do in Hersonissos
Hersonissos is anchored by a lively thoroughfare, lined with travel agencies, souvenir shops and dance clubs. If you prefer a more tranquil scene, head up the hill to discover picturesque towns like Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos.
Sunseekers should make a beeline for Sarandaris Beach, as its shallow water and golden sand make it a favourite with families. For a change of scenery, rent a quad bike and spend the day exploring the island. You'll discover remote villages, twisting mountainside roads and scenic lookouts.
Set on the eastern tip of Hersonissos, the open-air Lychnostatis Museum recounts the town's colourful history. Inside you'll find a traditional Cretan village, including a farmer's house and working windmill. You can attend weaving workshops, learn about ceramics, peer into herb gardens and watch folk dance performances.
Kids will love Aquaworld Aquarium, a private aquarium dedicated to rescuing marine animals. You can hold miniature turtles, observe exotic pythons and get face to face with poisonous scorpion fish.
Getting around Hersonissos
Hersonissos is best explored on foot. The resort sits on the coast of Crete, around 25 kilometres east of Iraklio. Heraklion is the closest airport, located around 20 minutes from the city centre.
