Traversed by the Bonesgate Stream, Chessington is a residential area at the southwestern edge of Greater London. It’s home to a historic zoo that has transformed into one of England’s most-visited theme parks, as well as a golf club that caters to both experienced players and kids.
Things to do in Chessington
Families shouldn’t miss a visit to the Chessington World of Adventures, a sprawling theme park that was established as a zoo back in 1931. It boasts more than 40 rides set across several themed areas that include the Wild West-inspired Mexicana, Pirates’ Cove and the Land of the Tigers. In addition to its rollercoasters and river ride, the park is home to more than 1,000 animals that include Sumatran tigers and western lowland gorillas.
Kids will also love the Hobbledown Adventure Farm Park and Zoo, which features wooden play areas, a recreated mining village and a high ropes course. Character meet-and-greets take place throughout the day, as do entertaining shows. In the zoo, you can get up close to camels, goats and otters, as well as playful lemurs and prairie dogs.
Chessington is also home to one of England’s most family-friendly golf destinations, the Horton Golf Park. Not only does it boast two challenging courses set in mature parklands but a Jungle Island crazy golf course designed specifically for young golfers. It comes complete with rapids, caves and an angry gorilla. For something more leisurely, you can stretch your legs on the Chessington Countryside Walk, which takes in the Ashtead Common National Nature Reserve.
