Sprawling east of Bangkok, Chachoengsao Province is an agricultural region surrounding the Bang Pakong River. During the mid-Ayutthaya period, people began settling along the river banks and canals. In Chong, “Chachoengsao” means “deep canal”.
Things to do in Chachoengsao
Floating markets, surprising temples and one of Asia’s best golf courses - Chachoengsao Province has it all.
Visit Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan. Overlooking the Bang Pakong River, this gilded temple was built during the late Ayutthaya Period. It’s famed for housing a revered image of the Buddha known as Luangpho Phuttha Sothon, which is said to have been floated down the river. Today, it is layered with gold leaf applied by local worshippers.
See the bright pink Ganesha of Wat Saman Rattanaram. Often likened to a theme park, Wat Saman Rattanaram is located on a small island in the middle of the Bang Pakong River. Its grounds are dotted with large statues of Indra, Brahma and Guanyin, as well as a reclining Ganesha painted bright pink. In one hand Ganesha holds a lotus flower and in the other, a broken piece of tusk.
Explore the Bang Khla Floating Market. Each weekend, the Bang Khla Floating Market comes to life with a diverse array of vendors selling everything from seasonal flowers to spicy curries. Boat cruises around the market allow you to sample a variety of local delicacies, as well as visit Wat Pho Bang Khla and the Pagoda of King Taksin the Great.
Play golf at the Thai Country Club. Considered one of the best golfing destinations near Bangkok, this 18-hole course was designed by Denis Griffiths to USGA standards. It features immaculately maintained greens, a sophisticated lounge and a restaurant serving global cuisine.
