Things to do in Buxton
Peak District National Park is Buxton's biggest draw. Spend your days exploring the limestone valley of Dovedale, wandering through wildflower-strewn meadows and hiking the iconic Pennine Way footpath. You can also take on Kinder Scout, a dramatic moorland plateau that rises over 600 metres above the Peak District.
Buxton is also home to a host of historic attractions. Filled with roses, greenhouses and gazebos, the Pavilion Gardens are a beautiful place for a stroll. You can also visit the adjoining opera house, which hosts a fantastic line-up of opera performances.
From elegant Georgian terraces to Victorian shopfronts, Buxton is brimming with turn-of-the-century charm. Housed in a handsome stone building, the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery showcases the history of the Peak District. Every Tuesday and Sunday the town square hosts a lively market where you can pick up organic vegetables and artisan baked goods.
Set just outside the town centre, Poole's Cavern is accessed by a steep staircase that leads into an enchanting limestone grotto. While you're there, enjoy a 20-minute woodland walk up to Solomon's Temple, which unlocks sweeping views over Buxton and the Peak District.
