Located on a peninsula between the Bro and Färlev fjords, Brastad is a small town in Västra Götaland County. It’s a charming base for exploring the attractions along Sweden’s west coast, which range from family-friendly zoos to cultural heritage museums and world-class golf courses.
Things to do in Brastad
Keen golfers can enjoy a round at the Lysekil Holma Golf Club, which is nestled in a beautiful setting east of Brastad. Oak trees and Bohuslän granite outcrops frame its fairways and greens and its 18 holes are sown with red fescue so they can be played throughout the year. Further north lies the Torreby Golf Club, which encompasses an impressive castle that serves as a clubhouse.
In the summer months, you can cool off with a swim at Goviks Badplats, a popular local beach that overlooks the Brofjorden. It offers picturesque views of the offshore islands and is just a stone’s throw from the Lahälla Knottfabrik. Its old stonemasonry workshop and factory have been preserved as a museum detailing the industrial heritage of the area.
Travelling with kids? Make the short drive north to Nordens Ark, a well-respected zoo that occupies the Åby Manor in Bohuslän. Established in 1989, it is home to animals from across the globe, including several rare and endangered Nordic species. You can get up close to wolverines, European wildcats and lynx, as well as native breeds of livestock and poultry. Nordens Ark also plays an important role in the rearing and reintroduction of white-backed woodpeckers, green toads and peregrine falcons.
