Set on the banks of River Derwent south-west of Sheffield, Baslow is a historic village in Peak District National Park. It lies on the doorstep of the Chatsworth Estate and is home to a 13th-century church, as well as a Grade I-listed stone bridge dating back to 1608.
Spend a day exploring the Chatsworth Estate, which centres around a stately home and its magnificent gardens. The period-furnished rooms are decorated with Old Masters drawings, paintings and sculptural works, with an informative audio guide leading you through the property. Kids will love the woodland playground and working farm.
On the other side of the village is Baslow Edge, a spectacular outcrop of gritstone rocks that can be accessed via a flat loop trail. Along the way, you’ll pass by the tower-like Eagle Stone. According to local tradition, men have to scale the rock formation to prove they are fit for marriage.
Getting there
Baslow is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Sheffield and just over an hour from Manchester Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular buses connect to Baslow and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
