Nestled in a glacial valley of the Gurktal Alps, Bad Kleinkirchheim is a picturesque spa town in the Austrian state of Carinthia. It was originally settled by Alpine Slavs and was later held by the Aribonid dynasty. Until the mid-20th century, Bad Kleinkirchheim was largely an agricultural town before establishing a reputation as a ski destination.
Things to do in Bad Kleinkirchheim
Bad Kleinkirchheim’s most famous architectural landmark is the Parish Church of St. Ulrich, which was almost completely rebuilt in the 18th century. Supported by elegant columns, its Baroque facade is topped by an 1837-built bell tower and an onion-shaped dome, as is typical of Austrian churches. Step inside to admire the vaulted ceilings and painted dome depicting St. Ulrich.
In the winter months, you can take advantage of the 185 kilometres of downhill skiing slopes or explore the cross-country trails that traverse Bad Kleinkirchheim. Once the snow melts, the ski lifts offer access to an extensive network of hiking trails, which range from short strolls to full-day walks through the Carinthian Nockberge Mountains. At the end of the day, you can rejuvenate at the Römerbad Thermal Spa with its relaxing baths and saunas.
Keen golfers can hit the fairways of the Golf Club Bad Kleinkirchheim, which offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. In addition to its 18 challenging holes, there is a driving range where you can practice your long-range game. Nearby is the Reptilienzoo Nockalm, which offers a fascinating insight into the world of snakes.
