Perched on the western shore of Carinthia's largest lake, Velden am Wörthersee is a picturesque market town in southern Austria. It was originally established as a resting place on the Roman road connecting Villach and Virunum before forming part of Hohenwart Castle’s estates. Today, it is one of the country’s most popular holiday resorts, thanks to its lakeside swimming spots and scenic hiking trails.

In the summer months, you can cool off with a swim at the Strandbad Velden, a grassy park where you’ll find beach umbrellas and sun loungers for rent. A lakefront promenade connects north to the Kurpark, which features a children’s playground and beautiful benches for enjoying the views.
For a longer walk, you can follow the Slow Trail Römerschlucht, which begins in the heart of Velden am Wörthersee and offers magnificent views across the lake from the Roman Gorge. At the Forstsee, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in a secluded, forest setting. Afterwards, continue on to the viewing platform at Hohes Kreuz to admire the Julian and Carnic Alps.
