Things to do in Arendal
Known as Pollen by locals, the inner harbour is the place to be in the summer. Soak up the sunshine at a waterfront bar and dine at al fresco restaurants overlooking the harbour. Many serve local delicacies such as haddock soup and oven-baked cod. Street musicians and open-air concerts give Pollen an infectious holiday atmosphere.
The pocket-sized historic district of Tyholmen looks like it’s been plucked from a fairy-tale. Stroll along the cobbled streets and browse boutiques selling handmade ceramics, jewellery and homewares, as well as artisan cheeses, chocolates and preserves. Visit the excellent Kløckers Hus, which charts the rich history and heritage of the district.
In summer, it’s hard to resist the crystal-clear water of the outdoor swimming pool. It floats within the marina and treats you to beautiful views over the harbour and the surrounding islands. The grassy foreshore is perfect for sunbathing and picnics.
Day trips to the offshore islands showcase the raw and rugged natural beauty of Arendal. Car-free Merdø is crisscrossed with walking trails that take you to pristine beaches and historic lighthouses. Enjoy coffee and cake at the open-air café and learn about the fascinating history of the island at the tiny Merdø Museum.
