The historic area of the city of Salzburg, Austria is known as Altstadt or “Old Town”. The best way to get around Altstadt is on foot as many main attractions are within easy reach of each other. City buses operate throughout the city, while Salzburg is home to over 100 kilometres of cycle paths, and bikes can be hired around the city centre. Those wishing to venture further afield will find the main railway station can transport them to cities and outlying areas in Austria.
Salzburg was named after the barges which used to transport salt along the river from local mines. The name translates as “Salt Fortress”. Altstadt is renowned for its striking architecture and is one of the best-preserved traditional centres in Austria and Germany combined.
