Located at the junction of the Salzach and Lammer rivers, Golling an der Salzach is a historic market town near Salzburg. The area has been settled since at least the Bronze Age and is named after a Slavic word meaning “bald mountain”. In 1526, Golling an der Salzach was heavily damaged during the German Peasants’ War.

Directly south of Golling an der Salzach is Burg Hohenwerfen, a medieval castle that is perched dramatically atop a 623-metre-high precipice. It was originally constructed in the 11th century by the Archbishops of Salzburg and was later used as a state prison and a military training camp. Today, Burg Hohenwerfen houses an extensive collection of weapons and a museum dedicated to falconry.

Golling an der Salzach is around 30 minutes’ drive from Salzburg and Salzburg Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe and the Middle East. Regular trains connect to the Golling-Abtenau railway station and buses travel through the town. The centre of Golling an der Salzach is compact enough to explore on foot.
