Located at the foot of the Gerlos Pass, Wald im Pinzgau is a picturesque Austrian village on the border between Salzburg and Tyrol. The area was once blanketed in forest, with the word “wald” meaning “woodland”, before becoming an important site for the mining of fluorite.
If you’re visiting in the winter months, you can hit the slopes of the Zillertal Arena, which is the largest ski area in the Ziller Valley. More than 50 lifts access its 150 kilometres of trails, which are designed for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. In addition, Wald im Pinzgau is a popular base for cross-country skiers.
In the summer months, Wald im Pinzgau provides access to an extensive network of hiking trails that offer sweeping views toward the peaks of the Hohe Tauern. At the end of the day, you can take advantage of the indoor and outdoor swimming pools at the Kristallbad or rejuvenate in the large sauna.
