Aarhus Cathedral, known locally as Aarhus Domkirke, is the longest church in Denmark and boasts an enormous nave almost 100 metres long. Look up to admire the soaring vaulted ceiling and elegant pointed windows.
At the eastern end of the nave, a Romanesque chapel offers a glimpse of the cathedral's 12th-century roots. The rest of the church was constructed in the 15th century and features a dramatic Gothic style. While most of the elaborate frescoes were whitewashed after the Reformation in the 1500s, some have been restored to their former condition.
Other highlights include the stunning gilded altarpiece carved by legendary Gothic artist Bernt Notke in the 15th century. You're welcome to attend services held on Sunday mornings and afternoons, which are often accompanied by the cathedral organist.
