Forming part of the Holmsland Dunes, Hvide Sande overlooks an artificial canal that connects the Ringkøbing Fjord to the North Sea. Despite its small population, it’s one of the largest fishing ports in Denmark and an important hub for shipbuilding, as well as a popular summer destination for outdoor activities.
Things to do in Hvide Sande
In the far north of Hvide Sande is the Lyngvig Lighthouse, which was constructed in the early 20th century and now operates as a history museum. Learn about the many shipwrecks that have occurred along Denmark’s North Sea coast and climb the 228 steps that lead to the top of the lighthouse for magnificent views across the dunes. If you’re travelling with kids, they can let off some steam in the nature playground.
Another museum not to miss in Hvide Sande is Abeline’s House, a waterfront farmstead that explores what life was once like in the Holmsland Dunes. Listen to Abeline talk about her experiences in the “Faces of the Past” exhibit and see traditional crafts brought back to life. In addition to a cosy cafe, there’s a museum store selling local souvenirs.
One of Hvide Sande’s most popular summer destinations is the South Beach, where you can swim in the North Sea, try your hand at surfing or stroll along the kilometres of sand. On the beach is a sculptural installation titled “Vestled” that is symbolic of nature’s grandeur. Alternatively, head to Skodbjerge, which is ideal for kite flying due to its strong winds.
Getting around Hvide Sande
Hvide Sande is around an hour’s drive from Esbjerg and Esbjerg Airport, which has flights to Stavanger and Aberdeen. The much larger Aarhus Airport is 2.5 hours away. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting to Hvide Sande and exploring the region.
