Surrounded by farms, woodlands and meadows, Malling is a picturesque village south of Aarhus. It’s renowned for its 12th-century walls, 1880s railway station and gourmet restaurant, all of which are just a few kilometres from the beaches of East Jutland.
In the heart of the village is the Malling Kirke, a whitewashed church that regularly hosts instrumental and choral performances. It’s a short stroll from the 19th-century tavern of Malling Kro, which now houses a gourmet restaurant specialising in locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. After your meal, you can catch a flick in the cosy cinema of Malling Bio, which was established back in 1943.
For a day at the beach, head to Ajstrup Strand, a white sweep of sand that overlooks the refreshing waters of the Kattegat Strait. Further north lies Mariendal Strand where you can swim in the summer months or enjoy long, leisurely walks when the temperatures drop.
Getting there
Malling is around 20 minutes’ drive from Aarhus and about an hour from Aarhus Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa. Regular buses and trams connect from Aarhus to Malling and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
