Zanka is an upbeat village set between sandy beaches and rugged mountains. It’s perched on the shores of Lake Balaton and has a family-friendly feel. Build sandcastles and bask in the sunshine on Zanka Beach. Work up a sweat on the beach volleyball courts and cool down in the calm, translucent water. Lifeguards patrol the beach in the summer. The grassy foreshore is perfect for picnics. Walk along the shoreline to find quieter stretches of sand.
Use Zanka as a launchpad to explore Balaton Uplands National Park. Discover a patchwork of unique Balkan ecosystems, including meadows, marshlands and volcanic hills. Hiking trails take you to ruined medieval castles and centuries-old churches. There’s a chance to spot local wildlife, including badgers, foxes and hares.
Fill up on delicious Hungarian dishes like “hortobagyi palacsinta” crepes stuffed with meat and “meggyleves” sour cherry soup. The northern shore of Lake Balaton is a prime wine-growing region. Pair your meal with a glass of citrussy Olaszrizling, as the volcanic soils give the wine a full-bodied flavour.
