Things to do in Hévíz
Gyógy-tó, also known as Lake Heviz, is dotted with water lilies and surrounded by lush evergreens. The public bathing centre juts out onto the lake and features several indoor pools. There’s also the option of swimming outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and forest scenery. As well as leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth, the mineral-rich water is a great natural remedy for joint pain and rheumatic diseases.
The town centre is a short stroll from the lake and is brimming with spa hotels and guesthouses, most featuring indoor pools filled with water from Lake Heviz. Soak your muscles in mineral-rich water, then enjoy a steamy session in the sauna. You can also indulge in massages, facials and body treatments featuring mineral-rich mud collected from the bottom of the lake.
You won’t go hungry in Heviz, with plenty of cosy cafes and restaurants to choose from. Most menus feature classic Hungarian dishes like goulash, “halaszle” fish soup and “porkolt” meat stew. For dessert, indulge in “palacsinta” sweet crepes filled with fresh fruit. The weekly farmers market is packed with stalls selling organic produce, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs.
Getting around Hévíz
Heviz is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The lake is a short 10-minute walk from the village centre. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore surrounding sights and attractions at your own pace. Buses run between Heviz and Budapest in around three hours.
