Encompassing the neighbourhoods of Rakospalota, Ujpalota and Pestujhely, the 15th District lies north-east of Budapest’s city centre. It became a popular beauty spot in the mid-19th century following the arrival of the railway, but by the turn of the century, it had been transformed into suburbia for the growing Hungarian capital.
Things to do in District XV - Rákospalota-Pestújhely-Újpalota
One of the 15th District’s most important architectural landmarks is its Art Nouveau water tower, which was constructed in 1912 and has been standing proud ever since. It played a significant role in World War II, with explosives stored within the tower and later seized by Hungarian partisans. At its base is a modern shopping complex, where you’ll find clothing stores and fast-food eateries.
Travelling with kids? Spend a day at Tarzan Park, a family-friendly attraction designed around 13 game “islands”. In addition to playground equipment and twisting slides, there’s a water play area where you can cool off in the summer months. The on-site kiosk serves drinks and snacks on its sun-dappled terrace.
Just a stone’s throw from the 15th District is the Hungarian Railway Museum, which occupies a former station and depot. It boasts more than 100 exhibits that include vintage steam locomotives, as well as a teak dining car built for the Orient Express. Learn about the history of railways in Hungary and get behind the wheel of a locomotive in the engine simulator. Kids will love the miniature railway that chugs its way around the grounds.
