Velence is a lively resort town fringed by sandy beaches and surrounded by rolling countryside. The town is perched on the banks of Lake Velence and popular with holidaymakers from Budapest, who flock to bask in the sunshine and swim in the warm, mineral-rich water.
Things to do in Velence
In addition to being one of the largest natural lakes in Hungary, Lake Velence is one of the warmest in Europe. Water temperatures can climb as high as 28 degrees Celsius, making the gold-sand beaches popular with swimmers and sunbathers. The mineral-rich water of Lake Velence is coveted for its wellness properties. High levels of magnesium and sodium will soothe your muscles and leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.
There are beaches for every occasion, from family-friendly stretches of sand to clothing-optional zones. Velence Korzo is one of the most popular beaches, fringed by soft sand and a grassy foreshore. Top up your tan and relax with a book under the shade of a colourful beach umbrella. Gárdonyi Sport Beach is a hub for water sports and Agárd Pop Beach is known for hosting outdoor concerts.
Bence Hill Tower soars 20 metres high and commands sweeping views over the lake and surrounding countryside. Climb the spiral staircase to the top of the tower and take in the panoramic vistas.
Stretch your legs on a scenic hike in the Velence hillsides. Trails wind through the countryside and take you past ruined castles and historic World War II sites. The 33-kilometre Velence Lake Loop skirts the shoreline and is best explored by bicycle. Head to the Lake Velence Bird Reserve Nature Conservation Area to spot hundreds of bird species, including Eurasian spoonbills, great egrets and greylag geese.
