Things to do in Unna
The rich history and heritage of Unna is on full display in the Old Town, also known as the Altstadt. Cobblestone streets crisscross the district and take you past half-timbered houses and centuries-old churches. Marktplatz is a hive of activity and lined with cosy cafes and taverns. In the centre of the square is a statue of a donkey, the official mascot of Unna. The square moonlights as a venue for markets, concerts and community events.
Visit the Centre for International Light Art (CILA), one of the only museums in the world dedicated to the medium. The museum is housed in a 19th-century red-brick brewery and reimagined as a dynamic space for light art. Admire a mesmerising collection of neon-lit sculptures, interactive exhibits and walk-through installations.
Stretch your legs in Kurpark, a beautiful green space in the heart of Unna. The park features tree-lined paths, grassy meadows and a picturesque lake – the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Meet friendly horses, goats and alpacas at the miniature farm and unpack a picnic under the shade of an enormous chestnut tree.
Dine at local taverns and enjoy traditional dishes from North Rhine-Westphalia. Try specialties like “flonz" smoked blood sausages served with onion rings, “halve hahn" sandwiches stuffed with gouda cheese and buckwheat pancakes topped with Westphalian ham and a dollop of creme fraiche. Finish with a glass of locally produced “herting porter" herbal liquor.
