Built along the banks of the River Wupper, Wuppertal is home to an abundance of parks and woodlands. In addition to its futuristic suspended railway, the city is dotted with a handful of unique cultural attractions. From a night out at the opera to an afternoon at a communist museum, Wuppertal is full of surprises.
Things to do in Wuppertal
By far, Wuppertal’s most iconic attraction is its gravity-defying suspension railway. Known as Wuppertal Schwebebahn, its tracks hover above the streets and give the city a futuristic feel. With an array of leafy public parks and woodland walking trails, Wuppertal is also a fantastic place for nature lovers.
If you’re craving a culture fix, spend a night out at the Wuppertal Opera House. Concerthall Stadthalle is another highlight, hosting regular performances by the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra.
While Karl Marx tends to steal the spotlight, German philosopher Friedrich Engels was also a co-founder of modern communism. Today, the 18th-century Engels Haus Museum offers a fascinating glimpse at his legacy.
There are plenty of outdoor activities on offer in Wuppertal, from strolling around the Wuppertal Zoo to getting lost in the Botanical Gardens. You can also venture out of town to the hiking trails of the Neandertal Valley.
