Tsagkarada invites you to experience the rhythms of life in a traditional Greek village. Set on the eastern slopes of Mount Pelion, the village commands spectacular views over the Aegean Sea and surrounding chestnut forests. Sip coffee in shady squares, admire picturesque churches and head to the coast to swim, sunbathe and dine at waterfront tavernas.
Things to do in Tsagkarada
Explore the cobbled streets of Tsagkarada and admire traditional stone houses with wooden window shutters. Climbing bougainvillea vines and hydrangeas add a splash of colour to the street scene. Agia Paraskevi Square is a focal point and shaded by an enormous plane tree, estimated to be more than 1,000 years old. Tables and chairs dot the square and provide a perfect setting to enjoy Greek coffee and treats like “galaktompoureko” custard pie.
Despite its compact size, Tsagkarada is home to dozens of churches and chapels. Set on the main square, the Church of Agia Paraskevi is one of the most beautiful and features a handsome stone façade. The chandelier-lit interior is decorated with ornate wood carvings.
Trails wind through the surrounding forests and showcase the natural beauty of the Pelion Peninsula. The neighbouring village of Mouresi is a popular destination. From here, follow the rocky trail down to the seaside village of Damouchari. Cool off in the crystalline Aegean Sea and enjoy lunch at a seafood tavern before heading back to Tsagkarada.
Dine at local tavernas and savour the unique flavours of Pelion. The region is renowned for specialty dishes like “spetzofai” spicy sausages cooked with red bell peppers and “tsitsiravla” wild greens. Start with a serve of “eliopsomo” olive bread and finish with desserts made with local walnuts, pistachios and honey.
