Forming part of Tam Dao National Park, Tam Dao is a picturesque mountain town to the north-west of Hanoi. It was a popular summer retreat during the French colonial years, with its cool climate and dense forests offering a respite from the coastal heat. Today, Tam Dao is renowned for its Gothic-style stone church, picturesque waterfall and misty mountain views.
Things to do in Tam Dao
One of Tam Dao’s most famous buildings is the Stone Church, which was constructed in 1937 on the site of a stilt house. Featuring Gothic architecture and topped by an 18-metre bell tower, it rises high above its mountainous setting. Admire its beautiful stained glass windows and serene interior before enjoying the views across Tam Dao from the arched courtyard.
Continue ascending the hill to the Sky Gate, which offers breathtaking views across the mist-draped mountains of Tam Dao. In addition to a cafe, the complex features several sculptural works designed for interactive photos. Of particular note are the ornamental gates that frame the afternoon sun and the immense hand that appears as though it is reaching toward the sky.
Nature enthusiasts can visit Silver Waterfall, which cascades 50 metres down a soaring cliff flanked by dense forest. At the end of the day, head to the night market in the heart of Tam Dao to feast on local specialties such as grilled chicken served with rice. In addition to its food stalls, the market sells handmade clothing, jewellery and scarves.
