Nestled in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains, Sa Pa is an alluring rural and hiking destination where you’re constantly greeted with views of the terraced rice fields of the Muong Hoa Valley. The township is positioned near one of Vietnam’s most challenging peaks, but also boasts fascinating hill tribes, numerous local restaurants and a central lake.
Things to do in Sa Pa
Keen hikers love visiting Sa Pa for its enthralling trekking experiences around the township. For something more relaxed, venture into the Muong Hoa Valley, which features hiking trails past tiered rice terraces and traditional hillside villages. The far more challenging Phan Xi Păng is a 3,143-metre-tall peak that’s ideal for multi-day hiking tours and soaking up incredible countryside vistas.
Don’t forget to explore the township too, which features the Sapa Museum, home to traditional artwork, locally-made crafts and cultural exhibits in a historic building. You can also access views of Phan Xi Păng without the hiking by riding up from the Cable Car Station Sapa. At the top, you’ll be able to see a striking pyramid sculpture and views above the clouds.
Discover one of Sa Pa’s most iconic architectural landmarks, the Notre Dame Cathedral. Built by the French in 1895, this stone church features Roman-Gothic architecture and a tall bell tower. It’s a short walk from Sapa Town Square, a popular meeting point with encircling shops and restaurants.
Delve into Vietnam’s sumptuous cuisine at the bustling Quán Đồ Nướng food court, which features numerous street-stall vendors selling barbecued meats. You can also sit down to a meal of Vietnamese fare at Good Morning Vietnam.
