Encompassing around 30,000 islands, the Stockholm Archipelago sprawls between Stockholm and the Baltic Sea. It’s home to picturesque fishing villages, sandy beaches and dense pine forests, with part of the archipelago designated as a Ramsar Site for its importance to native flora and fauna.
Stroll between the pastel-coloured houses that cluster in Vaxholm, then delve into the past at the 16th-century Vaxholm Fortress Museum, which was originally constructed by Gustav Vasa. Grinda is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, with pristine beaches and crystalline waters best explored by kayak.
On Stora Fjäderholmen, you can stretch your legs on the island’s forested trails or visit one of the local artist studios to shop for ceramics, jewellery and crafts. Upmarket boutiques and gourmet restaurants await on the island of Sandön, which has been a popular pleasure boating destination since the 19th century.
Getting there
Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the main aviation gateway to the Stockholm Archipelago and has flights to destinations across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Buses and subway services travel between some of the islands while ferries and taxi boats are also available for getting around the Stockholm Archipelago.
