Shravanabelagola is a sacred Jain pilgrim destination nestled between two enormous granite boulders. Gomateshwara Temple watches over the town and is anchored by a 17-metre-tall statue of Lord Bahubali. At the foot of the boulders is an emerald-green pond surrounded by verdant greenery.
Things to do in Shravanabelagola
A steep stone staircase leads up to Gomateshwara Temple, one of the holiest Jain pilgrim destinations in India. Walking up the staircase you’ll be joined by saffron-robed monks making their way up to Gomateshwara Temple. You can enjoy sweeping views over the temple, the town and the surrounding hillsides from the top.
A 17-metre-tall statue of Lord Bahubali towers over Gomateshwara Temple. It’s carved from a single block of granite and is one of the largest statues in the world. Pilgrims from around the world flock to the temple to pay their respects to Lord Bahubali and place gifts at his feet.
Shravanabelagola is a lively town where you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants and street food stands. Dig into delicious Southern Indian cuisine, including spicy curries, rice, pickles and chutneys served on banana leaves. Creamy mango lassis are a great way to cool off.
Getting around Shravanabelagola
The Shravanabelagola town centre is easy to get around on foot. Taxis and autorickshaws are a fast and comfortable way to get around. Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru is a three-hour drive east.
