Perched on the south-west shore of Lake Atitlan, San Pedro La Laguna is a bustling Guatemalan town that is a popular hub for learning Spanish. It has long been inhabited by the Tz’utujil people and has a rich history of textile weaving while it’s also a base for hikers accessing the nearby volcanic peaks.
Things to do in San Pedro La Laguna
Begin your visit at the Tzunan’Ya Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into the formation of Lake Atitlan and the history of the Tz’utujil people. See old photos of San Pedro La Laguna in days gone by and watch a short video taken in the town back in 1943. A highlight is having your “nahual” (animal counterpart) interpreted based on your date of birth according to the Maya calendar.
Also not to miss is the Teixchel Weaving Association, a Tz’utujil-run women’s collective that makes and sells fair-trade textiles. You can learn about the process of textile weaving or get hands-on during a class, then browse the beautiful garments available in the on-site store.
For elevated views of San Pedro La Laguna and Lake Atitlan, hike to the summit of Indian Nose. It’s named after its resemblance to the face of a sleeping man and is best visited at sunrise when the day’s first rays illuminate the landscape below. The forested hills surrounding the lake are dotted with coffee plantations, several of which offer guided tours and tastings.
